Bye Bye Evernote, Hello Notion!

Hello everyone! After more than ten years, it’s finally happened. I’ve said goodbye to Evernote, my go to note keeping app. I’ve written many blogs on how to use Evernote for writing, or using it as a planning tool for your annual goals, but sadly the time has arrived for us to part ways.

Bye Bye Evernote Hello Notion

Everything comes to an end

Evernote and I have a rich history. At some point I think many people will have been annoyed by my enthusiasm about the note keeping app and its limitless possibilities, but I’m certain I’ve inspired some people to use it as well and it was a wonderful road that we walked together. I do still have my account and I’ll have to extract a lot of notes from it, still, but the fact still remains that I will stop using it soon.

The reason is that Evernote has been increasing its prices extremely, while offering absolutely nothing in return for this. In fact, the last few changes made to the app only made its functionality worse for me. I decided it was time to at least end my subscription and go “free” for a little while. The things only got worse, because Evernote doesn’t allow you to synchronize more than two devices. I don’t know who thought of this, but it never was like that before. So that just added another nail to the coffin. What made it even worse was that you needed to desychronize devices if you accidentally logged into another and the amount of desyncs per month is also limited! Which means I can’t log on to the desktop app at the moment. Unbelievable!

So, now where do I keep my notes?

I decided to take a look on Reddit for some suggestions. My literal Google search was this:

“why has Evernote become such a shit app”

My first hit was a Reddit post, so I decided to check it out and found someone mention a couple of alternatives to Evernote. Obsidian was mentioned quite a few times, but also another app called Notion, which apparently has a bit of a learning curve. I love learning, so I decided to go ahead and make an account. The fact that you can just use the app from anywhere is great and there don’t seem to be any restrictions on how many devices you can use to access your notes. Sure, the free app doesn’t allow for big file uploads, but I rarely do that anyway. And if at some point I will need it, I’ll happily upgrade, because this app offer so much more than Evernote does!

For instance, there are a lot of templates you can use, there are agile boards you can use for project planning. You can create lists of books you’ve read, or plan to read. I’ve also created these for movies and videogames, so I can keep track of what I am playing and want to play, but also to keep notes while I’m playing or reading for future reference and writing reviews. It really does offer a lot and I’m quite amazed by all of its nifty features. This coming time I will delve deeper into its functionalities, but as you can tell I’m enthusiastic about the app and I’ll make sure to share how I am using it in future blogs!

If you’re already curious, please do check out their website and maybe even create an account? I’m not sponsored by Notion, so I won’t get anything out of referring to you, but I really recommend it!

Have a nice week!

Jeffrey

  1. I just made the move to Notion too and I must say – I should have done it sooner. I was even looking for people who had done the same and experienced the immediate relief. Even without upgrading yet, or figuring things out I was able to make an account, import the evernote notebook I was working on, and just start typing – all within 5 mins.

Made me realize how much time I wasted on Evernote trying to de-sync, close the many pop-ups, refresh pages to remedy bugs, etc. Not to mention they stopped offering support to free-tier users so you were just own your own if you had issues or had to ask the almighty PinkElephant.

So glad I made the change. Will be deleting Evernote for good this month! Good riddance!

    • Hi Britt! Glad to hear it! I’m a big fan of Notion, especially with all the new updates it’s just been a great note keeping program that allows so much more freedom than Evernote did. Especially in the recent past. I haven’t ever looked back and missed Evernote after installing Notion, either!
