Nintendo Direct (09-02-’22) Recap

Yesterday we finally got a new Nintendo Direct, the first one of this year. This showcase was mainly focussed on releases in the first half of this year, but there were a few welcome surprises to be found. Of course, being a huge Nintendo fanboy, I have some opinions on what was presented and so here’s my full take on what was showcased.

The Full Presentation

Here’s the full presentation, if you somehow missed it. Or if you just feel like watching all that goodness again. Overall I was very pleased with this Nintendo Direct and it felt like it had a good amount of footage on games we already knew about, but also a few very nice and welcome surprises! So, let’s dive into the announcements, shall we?

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

Planned releasedate: 24-06-2022

Holy moly! Did this Nintendo Direct start off with a bang! I was really hoping for a new Fire Emblem title and was so stoked to see this. Even if it’s a Warriors style spin-off from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, it’s still good news. I really liked the first Fire Emblem Warriors, although I thought it was inferior to Hyrule Warriors. Still, these games are always a lot of fun and I am sure to play this one somewhere down the line.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp

Planned releasedate: 08-04-2022

I remember really liking Advance Wars when it released on the GBA back in the day. I never bothered buying the second instalment, probably because there were so many other great games that I was playing back then. I do intend to get this one, because I love tactical turn-based games and with all of the new quality of life improvements and new modes this bundle has to offer, I think we’re in for a treat!

No Man’s Sky

Planned releasedate: Summer ’22

I was absolutely stoked when I got my hands on No Man’s Sky on the PS4 a couple of years ago, but after playing it extensively the boredom set in and I had the feeling that there was little point to playing the game beyond getting more upgrades, bigger ships, etc. There was very little incentive left to play, especially since the game failed to deliver on its promises at launch and it was becoming a massive grindfest and the gameplay was becoming way too repetitive. I know this was mostly fixed in a later patch and that the Switch edition will be just that version, but it won’t be enough to lure me back in for another spin. I also wonder just how much downscaling they’ll need to do to get this game to work properly on the Switch. The PS4 version already had its fair share of framedrops and performance issues, so I’m not hopeful for this port.

Mario Strikers: Battle League

Planned releasedate: 10-06-2022

I’m not a fan of soccer at all, but Mario sports games are always fun, especially because they’re anything but the real thing. Mario Strikers is one of those games that looks like a lot of fun and I’m definitely going to keep my eye out for this one. It definitely looks like it could bring back those same vibes I used to have when playing Nintendo Soccer on the Game Boy back when I was a kid.

Splatoon 3 – Salmon Run Next Wave

Planned releasedate: Summer ’22

I have to admit that I never really played any of the Splatoon games, despite their popularity. I only played the demo for the first one years back and decided that it wasn’t really a game for me. One thing that really stood of for me in this video was how absolutely bad the music is. I’m not sure if this is intentional or not, but it really wasn’t good. Having said that, I think the coop missions do look fun, fighting waves of evil salmon looks like fun. So maybe, I’ll pick this one up somewhere down the line, but I doubt it.

Front Mission 1st: Remake and Front Mission 2: Remake

Planned releasedate: Summer (for the 1st)

These games look like they’ll be fun. I’ve never played the originals, so these remakes would be my first introduction into this series. I’m not really a mech loving guy, but seeing as this is a turn-based tactical RPG, I might just give it a spin, if the reviews are good.

Disney Speedstorm

Planned releasedate: Summer ’22

A Mario Kart clone with Disney and Pixar characters. Admittedly, the game looks fun, but seeing as this is a free-to-play title, it’s going to be a hard pass for me. I really dislike the F2P concept and this will probably mean that all the good racers and a lot of content will be firmly locked behind paywalls and that’s something nobody should want. If I want arcade racing fun, I’ll just boot up Mario Kart 8.

Star Wars: The Force Unleased

Planned releasedate: 20-04-2022

Having never played these Star Wars games, I feel that I have to at least try this one. I hope the game can be played without the motion controls, however, because I’m really not keen on them at all. There’s only a few games where they work good, but for games like these (and Skyward Sword for instance), they always feel Forced (see what I did there?). I really hope this port will get some good reviews, otherwise I’ll just skip it, especially because the story isn’t considered canon either (and it shouldn’t be, because Starkiller is one OP SoB).

Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection

Planned releasedate: 17-02-2022

I used to be a big fan of the Assassin’s Creed games up until Black Flag. That’s where these games became too samey (maybe even before that) and I kind of lost my interest. Especially because Ubisoft went and released one every single year. It’s not a good thing, for any franchise if you ask me to release as much as possible. Anyway, the golden age of the games is definitely when they introduced us to the Italian assassin Ezio and this collection is great if you never played any of the games. Me, personally, I’m done with the franchise, so I’ll not dive back into this.

SD Gundam Battle Alliance

Planned releasedate: ’22

More mechs. I can’t say I was impressed with the art direction of this game. Apparently you’ll have plenty of customization options and whatnot, but to me this game looked really bland, so it’s a pass for me.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition

Planned releasedate: 07-04-2022

The Chrono series is critically acclaimed and as such I was excited to see a port of Chrono Cross coming to the Switch, but it seems that the game suffers heavily on performance and the game only got the slightest bit of polish, probably leaving this a very rough around the edges experience. I’m not sure what to think about it yet, so I’ll keep an eye on the reviews before deciding if I’ll dive into this myself.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Planned releasedate: 25-03-2022

3D Kirby is a dream come true. The game gives me Super Mario 3D World vibes and that is a good thing, seeing as I really love that game. Everything about this game looks like it’ll just be a blast. I’m not sure if it’s just going to be one big world to explore, or separate levels, but who cares? It’s a freaking new Kirby game! The Mouthful Mode also looks like it’s going to be fun, you can use it to control cars, vending machines and probably a whole lot more. This is one of those releases that will be a must-have for the Switch and I can’t wait to play it myself!

MLB The Show 22

Planned releasedate: 05-04-2022

Baseball, or any other sports game? Yeah, that’s a hard skip for me and I won’t waste more words about it, haha.

Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece for Cloud

Planned releasedate: 10-02-2022

Kingdom Hearts is one of those series I never got into. Not because I didn’t want to, but because they were a PlayStation exclusive for so long and I never had one until the PS4. This collection is a total of nine games, I think, but seeing as this is a cloud version, I won’t be getting it. Cloud versions are the absolute worst idea ever and I won’t support it. The idea that the game runs on a server and you need to have an internet connection to play it, just doesn’t work. Besides all that, the servers that are running the game will eventually stop hosting the game, meaning you won’t be able to play them after that, which basically turns your purchase into a lease. If that wasn’t enough to put you off from getting a cloud version, the servers will have to stay up and running, meaning they’ll use a lot of energy, which means they’ll add to the carbon emissions which we’re so desperately trying to reduce. All in all cloud gaming is bad and you should never ever support it.

Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series

Planned releasedate: 08-07-2022

Klonoa looks like a lot of fun. The 2.5D platformer and its sequel will be available as a nice bundle on the Switch. I might give these a go, if they’re any good. But as usual, I’ll wait for a little bit, before deciding if I’ll dive in.

Portal: Companion Collection

Planned releasedate: ’22

It’s nice to see Portal coming to Nintendo Switch. This collection is a bundle of Portal 1 and 2 and while I love the fact that they’re coming to Switch, I’ve already played them and don’t really feel the need to do so again. If I feel the urge to play them, I’ll just boot them up on Steam, where they’ve been in my collection for ages. If you never played these games, they are highly recommended by yours truly.

Live A Live

Planned releasedate: 22-07-2022

When I saw the trailer for this game I just knew that I had to have this game. I love the HD-2D art direction and the fact that you can choose which part of the story you want to play, just seems marvelous. They all look fun and I can’t wait to dive into this game later this year as a JRPG lover.

Nintendo Switch Sports

Planned releasedate: 29-04-2022

This part of the Nintendo Direct was as whacky as we can expect from Nintendo. This reimagined version of Wii Sports looks like it’s going to be really fun! A couple of new sports have been added and later this year Golf will also be added to the game. I think this is typically one of those fun casual games that you can play with friends, or alone, that are both fun and good for your health. Maybe not as much as Ring Fit Adventure, but definitely good. 🙂

Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival

Planned releasedate: ’22

Rhythm games can be a lot of fun and this game does look like it could be a lot of fun. What I dislike about the announcement, however, is that there will also be a subscription service that gives you access to 500 songs. I really dislike stuff like this. Why can’t it just be part of the main game? So, yeah, I think this will probably mean another pass, on principle alone. But also because I just don’t know how good these games really are and my feeling for rhythm always seems a bit off anyway, haha.

Triangle Strategy

Planned releasedate: 04-03-2022

Oh, yes! This is one of those must have releases for me this year. I love turn-based strategy games and not only does the art direction of this game look gorgeous. It also reminds me of Final Fantasy Tactics and it looks like the game will have great replayability, depending on the choices you make. Whenever choices need to be made, it looks like there are three options, offense, stealth, or diplomacy. This game in in HD-2D as well, so it looks like I’ll be playing a lot of games using this style this year.

Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course

Planned releasedate: 30-06-2022

Cuphead is one of those games I really want to get into at some point. The art direction looks so awesomely smooth and is a real throwback to cartoons of old. It’s also a really brutal game in terms of difficulty, from what I heard. This new DLC adds a new character, and a lot of new content. I think I’ll have to pick up the original first, before diving into this, but I can definitely see myself playing this fantastic game.

Earthbound & Earthbound Beginnings

Planned releasedate: 09-02-2022

While I already own both of these games on the Wii U, I love that they’re finally added to the Nintendo Switch Online subscription. I think it’s just great that we’re finally able to play these classic RPGs on the go. I dove into Earthbound Beginnings back when it was released on Wii U, but never quite gotten far. I plan to change all of that and really play these two titles. Especially after reading so much about their creation process and how hard the development was for these titles.

Zombie Army 4: Dead War

Planned releasedate: 26-04-2022

Yeah, zombies… not excited about this at all. This is the fourth instalment in the series and I have never even heard of this in the first place. There’s coop, which sounds like fun, I guess, but overall this is going to be a skip for me.

GestuFumaDen: Undying Moon

Planned releasedate: 09-02-2022

Yes! This game looks like it’s a great metroidvania style game. It looks like it has fun combat mechanics and I was surprised to see that it’s a Konami release, which used to be a big name back in the SNES days. I think this game is a remake of an old classic, but I’m not entirely sure. This one has been put on my ever growing wishlist, hoping I’ll get around to playing it some day.

Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles

Planned releasedate: 10-06-2022

A game by SEGA! It looks like a fun hack & slash action game and the graphics look great, but like with many other games that were on offer, I’m not convinced this is for me. I think I’ll have to wait for the reviews to see if this is something I could sink my teeth into. I do love to see that many of the Japanese titles retain (part of) their original name in the West, however.

Lego Brawls

Planned releasedate: June ’22

A “Smash” clone with LEGO. Sounds like something I would love, seeing as I am really into both of them. But sadly, this game looks rubbish. This is mostly because you just can’t top Super Smash Bros. in terms of gameplay and vastness. Many have tried and I don’t think LEGO can bring anything to the table that will make this game come even close to what I’d hope and expect from a platform brawler.

Two Point Campus

Planned releasedate: 17-05-2022

I still have to play Two Point Hospital at some point, as I love sim games and Two Point Campus looks like a lot of fun. You can create your own campus and from the looks of it, it really is going to be a lot of fun. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for the reviews on this one, but I’m more inclined to try Two Point Hospital, because running and desiging a school just seems less appealing to me. But who knows? 🙂

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC

Planned releasedate: 18-03-2022 (First wave)

There were rumours going around about a possible Mario Kart 9 announcement, but instead we got this! 48 new courses will be added to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe over the course of this and next year. Each wave will add 8 new courses featured in previous releases. What’s great about this pass is that it is included in the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, which we are subscribed to, of course 😉 I really can’t wait to race on these remastered courses!

Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Planned releasedate: September ’22

As usual Nintendo decided to save the best for last. Or at least, their biggest announcement! I was hoping to get some Breath of the Wild 2 footage, or perhaps the definitive title for the game, but it looks like they’re waiting to reveal that at a later date. Instead we got the announcement for Xenoblade Chronicles 3, which is a really big announcement and I think one that very few saw coming. The Xenoblade games are highly regarded as great action JRPGs and I have the first two instalments, but never finished both of them. The announcement for this new instalment has sparked a renewed interest in me to play those two, however. I’m just really glad that this was announced.

Overall impressions

This has got to be one of the best Nintendo Directs we’ve had in a long time and I’m excited to see so much great releases coming this year. With the focus on the first half of the year, this means the second half has so much potential to make this year even greater than it already is. We can still expect Breath of the Wild 2 later this year, but so that’s reason enough to call 2022 a winning year 😉

I was kind of bummed out by one thing, though. There was still no mention of Metroid Prime 4, which was announced years ago. A little voice inside me also begged for Metroid Prime Trilogy Remastered. But there was only mention of a patch for Metroid: Dread, which I left out of this article, because it’s not a new game announcement. One other thing I was really hoping for was the announcement for Mother 3, seeing as we are getting Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings on Virtual Console. There was also no mention of Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, but that’s okay, they’ll probably focus on that in a later Nintendo Direct.

2022 is looking to be a great year once again for Nintendo Switch owners, with plenty of new games, remakes and ports. The main problem for me is always time, so I’ll have to choose my games carefully, but there are definitely a couple here that are must haves. My current top three would be:

  1. Triangle Strategy
  2. Kirby and the Forgotten Land
  3. Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

Did you like this Nintendo Direct? And what are your opinions on the games? Please let me know in the comment section below!

Happy gaming!
